What to Pack for your South African Safari!

As a general guideline when packing for your African Safari, do not take too much clothing along. Ensure what you pack is comfortable and is preferably "wash and wear".

  • Casual clothing should be sufficient during the day. For your bush safari pack plain muted colours. Avoid brightly coloured and white clothing.
  • Dependent on the venue, semi-smart or casual dress is recommended for evenings and dinner.
  • Pack light rain gear for the rainfall months. South Africa experiences summer rainfall (generally September to April). The exception is the Western Cape, which experiences winter rainfalls.
  • Don't forget to bring a bathing suit, sun/bush hat, a high-factor sunscreen and a good pair of sunglasses.
  • Cold spells occur between May to September, particularly in the early mornings and evenings. It is advisable to pack a good winter jersey, scarf and gloves and a warm anorak/parka.
  • While you will have no problem finding a pharmacy in the cities and smaller towns, it is advisable to pack a basic medical kit, particularly if you plan to go on safari. This should include your malaria prophylactics (if necessary), prescribed medication, pain killers e.g. Panado or Aspirin, Imodium, throat lozenges, plasters, eye-drops, antiseptic cream, anti-histamine cream and a good insect repellent.
  • Pack your sandals, a pair of semi-smart shoes suitable for dinner/evenings and a good pair of running/walking shoes.
  • Don't forget your personal toiletries.
  • Bring along a good pair of binoculars, your camera and film, and/or video equipment.
  • Don't forget to pack your visas, tickets, passports, money etc!
