Jack's Camp
Jack's Camp is located deep in the Kalahari Desert on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans, the largest saltpans in the world. Jack's Camp, situated on an isolated island, faces the seemingly endless horizons of the Makgadikgadi and it is from this haven of desert luxury that you will explore the harsh but mesmerising environment of the Kalahari Desert. Palm trees guard the entrance to the salt pans of the Makgadikgadi, where the silence is tangible and space seemingly infinite. Jack's Camp is nestled amongst these tall swaying palms which set the scene for an elegant tented safari in the most unique surroundings.
The Makgadikgadi pans consist of two major relic basins. It is on the edge of the western basin, also known as the Ntetwe Pan, that you will find Jacks Camp.
Jack's Camp is a classic desert safari camp accommodating 16 guests in 8 large walk-in tents. The rustic but elegant accommodation features an adjacent open-air private bathroom with bucket showers suspended from a palm tree.
Interiors are classic safari style with original 1940's Persian rugs, bone-handled silver and pure cotton sheets. Mosquito nets drape the four-poster and a wicker kist sits at the foot of the bed. Wooden tables, canvas chairs and lantern light completes the scene. Tents are positioned for maximum privacy and perfect views. Accommodation is comfortable and in keeping with the character of the Makgadikgadi.
Central facilities include a mess tent for dining, a tea tent with Persian carpet cushions for socialising and a shop tent. The kitchen and main area are powered by a 220v generator which runs while the guests are out of camp. When the guests return from their daily activities the generators are generally switched off to ensure peace and quiet. Paraffin lamps provide the camp’s lighting. Batteries can be charged. The kitchen supplies delicious, fresh and innovative cuisine, with all baking prepared daily in hot coal camp ovens.
After the rains, which fall from around November to April, the pan becomes the focus for the enormous herds of Wildebeest, Zebra and Springbok which migrate from the Boteti River and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. The summer rains fill the pan with warm shallow water forming one of the most important wetland sites in Southern Africa and enticing waterfowl, wattled cranes, pelicans and flamingos to its waters.
During the dry, winter months the migrations move westwards to the Boteti river but many desert adapted creatures remain resident.
This is an extremely fragile environment filled with fascination and interest. The management and guides have an approach of maximum care for the environment. This is a destination for the true lover of remote experiences.
Activities at Jack's Camp are carefully planned to be as informative as they are fun. Qualified zoologists/biologists explain the fascinating adaptations of unique desert wildlife to the area. During your stay you may also walk with Bushmen trackers who provide a unique connection between their fascinating culture and the natural environment. Game drives are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles during the wet season. Weather permitting, and if the pans are dry, you may venture into the impenetrable saltpans on 4WD quad bikes and explore remote archaeological sites.
